According to the EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) in the 2014-2022 time span, the number of marine incidents has been fairly constant (-1.8% in 8 years), despite the technological and safety progress. In parallel, the number of “very serious” casualties was reduced by 52%, but this number still heavily varies yearly.
While waiting for the 2024 “Annual Overview of Marine Casualties and Incidents” based on 2023 data, we have already experienced some tremendous incidents, including the Baltimore bridge disaster of last week.
