Despite Seaspan being often left aside from most container news, the first Non-Operating Owner (NOO) is one of the main movers and actors in the market.
With almost 2.1 million TEU (of which 200 thousand on order), the world’s biggest container vessel charterer would place 6th – right behind Hapag-Lloyd – in the carriers ranking, moving in 3rd place if considering only the carriers’ owned TEU.
Considering Seaspan’s relevance, it is interesting to remember that Ocean Network Express – currently 6th carrier – owns 28,7% of its Holding company (Atlas Corp.) since the 2023 10.9 billion deal.
This allows ONE a remarkable market advantage since:
- 24 vessels from ONE are chartered with Seaspan and other 15 newbuild vessels were also fixed them.
- Seaspan is a core charterer for most of the top carriers including MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd; with ZIM relying on Seaspan for a large portion of its fleet (*95% of ZIM’s capacity is chartered).
Considering this intriguing strategy, uncommon in the container market, it will be interesting to see how ONE will move on further this year: leading its current alliance without Hapag-Lloyd from 2025 or considering new perspectives with the first-in-class MSC, the only “single” top carrier available? Time will tell.
